How I got here and what I have learned so far...

My name is Rommi Shay, I am 23 years old I'm from Toronto Ontario. Upon completion of high school I decided that I would attend college to study fashion marketing. While in this program, I felt that the best way for me to understand the fashion industry was to get my feet wet and test out as many outlets as possible. I started off as an intern at an upscale Chanel boutique where I was able to experience the higher end of fashion. After 2 years of interning I felt that it was time to try something new. I made the transition into the whole-sale spectrum where I assisted in a show room that held many European labels. Once my internship at the showroom was completed, I began working in retail sales with no sales experience. After working for 6 months with this company I applied for a managerial position at one of their new locations. I landed the job and stayed with the company for 2 years.

In my spare time I volunteered as much as possible to help different foundations and organizations, specifically those involved with children and the environment. I single handedly organized an event for The Hospital for Sick Children, as well as served on other committees to raise money for the hospital. I have recently teamed up with Environment America to help raise money and awareness for the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and teamed up with a group of friends to raise money and awareness for Lyme Disease by orchestrating and participating in a sky dive for the first time this past August.

During the second year managing the clothing store I realized that my heart, and head, was no longer in fashion but that I was truly passionate about helping organizations and giving back to the community as much as possible. I was faced with a new challenge, how am I going to follow my passion? I spoke with one of my mentors, who worked for CTV in the communications department, and she mentioned the Public Relations program that is offered by the University of Victoria. This online distant education program offers me the knowledge and skills I will need when working with various organizations, and allows me the flexibility to work while pursuing my education.

I am now entering my third and fourth courses into the Public Relations program and with each semester I continue to become more and more excited. So far the most important thing I have learned in the program is that one of the most paramount tools in today's business world is effective communications. Without effective communications you can not have a successful business. As my time at the University of Victoria progresses I can not wait to learn more and use my knowledge to help and give back to the community.
